Well in Romania they usually refer to it as Greek Catholic or Uniate Catholic (except in Romanian lol... and more often then not they just say Catholic anyways)... I usually only hear Greeks refer to it as GO, I think because it tends to make people think that you must be Greek in ethnicity then... that only Greeks are Greek Orthodox or whatever. I suppose people think that when hearing the names of all the Eastern Orthodox churches too.

Greek Orthodox is not Greek Catholic, the Orthodox do not look to the Pope as the head of their church, but the Catholics do.

I have never been clear on this... I haven't been able to find any information that doesn't use the terms interchangeably, and yet... I just don't really understand I guess. I have even taken a course on religion at university. I know that the Greek church is sort of the father of all the other Eastern Orthodoxy churches, which of course do not believe in the infallibility of the pope, and I know that about 6% of Romania's population is Roman Catholic, and I know that Monica Rosu does believe in the infallibility of the pope because she really wants to meet him and all of that. Where I get confused is in the terms "Greek Orthodoxy," "Greek Catholicism" and "Uniate Catholicism"... they seem to be used interchangeably, and I always thought one of the fundamental differences of the Greek church to its Latin counterpart was the issue over the infallibility of the papalcy... in fact I thought that until someone (I think it may have been you, actually lol) said Monica Rosu was Greek Catholic, not Roman Catholic, before the forum crashed. I was confused because we know Monica digs the pope, and her uncle works at the Vatican or whatever (if anyone comes across that article again, the one with the play on her name of Rosu, please post it Smiley ), and I had always thought the Greek Church did not recognize the papalcy, just as the rest of the eastern churches. Do you have some sources you can cite, or can you explain it in more detail please? I'd really like to understand it better, that is if you don't mind. In any case, as a blanket term we can refer to Rosu as "Catholic" because we know from articles that she is that at least.

Sorry Taylor, but I didn\'t read you entire response (It makes my head spin Smiley)

But, Greek Orthodox is very different from Greek Catholic.

Also, Romanians aren\'t Greek Orthodox...they are Romanian Orthodox!!! Also slightly different.

And Biserica Română Unită cu Roma (which I guess now Monica is) identifies itself as Greek Catholic. It was a Greek Catholic church established in Romania which never made the changes to make it different.

You are right Taylor the Eatern Churches don't accept The Papalcy except the Greek Catholic Church, and that is why they are persecuted in the East for being traitors, especially in Russia which is a shame.

And I think it was me who said that she was Greek Catholic before. Smiley

Doesn't Monica's name mean Rose or something?

Yes rosu means red. I know all about Romanian Orthodox, I don't need that explained. It was the Greek religions I have always been confused about. And yes Natster I was talking to you when I said I thought it was you who said that... I thought I remembered that correctly. So then, there must not be many Greek Catholics in Greece? Because the numbers I have seen (statistics) have said that around 98% of Greece's population is Greek Orthodox, and also that about 98% of Greece's population is ethnically Greek (not a lot of people emmigrating to Greece apparently lol), so it would seem then that most of the Greeks in Greece identify themselves as GO. That's really too bad that they are persecuted in Russia. When Ceausescu was in power in Romania, anyone who wasn't RO was persecuted and many defected because of it. I've never heard any ill words against people who choose to recognize the papalcy in Romania since though. I think for the most part they are pretty much left alone. People aren't so focused on religion in Romania these days really. Even though some 87-90% of Romania's population identify themselves as RO (and very few as atheist or agnostic), not all that many are really practicing, at least not to the degree expected by the church doctrine. Maybe that's why religious issues aren't a big deal anymore. Well this is very interesting... so how many Greek Catholics are there in Russia? I think I have figured out that Greek and Uniate Catholicism are still the same, no? Because about 6% of Romania's population is Roman Catholic, and the statistic I have heard is that 3% of those Roman Catholics are Uniate. This is a very interesting conversation. Bean (I think that was the other poster, I hate how you can't see the recent posts when posting your own post), where are you from anyways? Are you Romanian as well? Do you live there? I think I remember you posting pictures and stuff that no one had seen, on the old board. You seemed like a bit of an insider lol.

Oh and okay this is what I was thinking of that was Uniate I believe. That makes sense. See, now, I knew that Greek Orthodox was like the Romanian Orthodox of Greece, just as, say, Bulgarian Orthodox is the Romanian Orthodox of Bulgaria, so I knew from that angle it made no sense for Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholicism to be the same if GC existed among ethnic Romanians since obviously in Romania we are Romanian and not Greek lol... that would just be funky and confusing. I had all these long jumpy thought processes lol. I don't understand why all these information resources seem to use the terms synonomously, when they clearly aren't. We need better information out there. Maybe we should write some books you guys Smiley . Do all kinds of deep research- which apparently most people have not engaged in- and write some factual, straight-forward information.

yep. here's an article

Vatican Red

(Rosu= Red in Romanian and the title is a play on words about her name and the color of the Vatican)

Baptised in the Catholic tradition, double Olympic Champion Monica Rosu keeps religious holidays with devotion. In her room at the Deva training center she has prayer books, a rosary and an icon received from her mother.

Her biggest dream is to visit the Vatican to receive the Pope’s blessing. “My uncle, Matei Laslau, who stood alongside the Holy Father when he was a priest in Italy, promised me that he would do everything possible to help fulfill this wish” stated Monica. Having left the country for more than 11 years Laslau has preached in one of the most important Italian provinces, Ravenna. “I have met the Holy Father countless times. Before his Holiness’ visit to Romania we talked about our country’s beauty and especially about Moldova. Here in Ravenna, during the Olympics in Athens everyone rooted for our women’s gymnastics team” added Rosu’s uncle.

Director at the Ravenna Sport’s Club

Monica’s uncle is in charge of the Italian Ravenna Sport’s Club. “I have to ensure the spiritual assistance for all the athletes in the province. Among the members of the parish I also have an Olympic Vice Champion at canoeing, Joszefa Idem” stated Lasla. Before the Olympics he gave his nephew a blessing through a phone call. A few days after Athens father Laslau ordered a set of shirts with his nephew’s name on the back which he gave to the Ravenna church goers.
